2011 Simon Estes Scholars named from Benton County

  The Simon Estes Iowa Educational Foundation recently announced that Catherine Steinfadt of Atkins, Connor Roth of Luzerne and Nathaniel Webber of Vinton were named Simon Estes Scholars from Benton County for 2011.  Catherine graduated from Benton Community High School and will be attending Iowa State University majoring in Animal Biology; Connor Roth graduated from Belle Plaine High School and will be attending Coe College majoring in History and Nathaniel Webber graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg High School and will be attending University of Northern Iowa majoring Music Education.

Vogel named to Dean's List at U of Nebraska-Lincoln

       Krista Jo Vogel of Atkins was named to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Deans' List/Honor Roll for the spring semester of the 2010-11 academic year. Vogel is a senior news and editorial major in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. To be named to the Dean's List of the College of Journalism requires a GPA of at least 3.

Cedar 6 Gets Things Done In North Dakota

  By: Casey Kearney and Shane Eazor   AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team Cedar 6 was called away from a Cedar Rapids community development project to assist in flood recovery efforts in Williston, North Dakota. Williston along with many other towns in North Dakota has been experiencing a record high water table which caused water to flood the basements of many residents.

AmeriCorps NCCC Team Works on State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, MI

  Just a week after finding out about their Round 2 project, AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 6 was diverted on a disaster relief project down in Chickasaw County, Mississippi.  The group spent two weeks removing debris and trees from yards that had been affected by the tornadoes that blew through the region about two months ago.  Oak 6 members enjoyed the opportunity to travel outside of their region and lend a hand to those whose lives were changed by the storms.

Coots Material Rocks!

Coots Materials continues donating gravel as needed to the animal shelter.      A truck load of Thank You's to the Coots family for donating rock to the shelter! Thanks also to Flick, Larry, and Ken for their help. Coots has been donating rock to the shelter for many years, we want them to know it is very much appreciated. Coots Materials, YOU ROCK!!!!

AmeriCorps NCCC Team Cedar 2 Serves on their Second Project in South Dakota

Samantha Czerkas,Hunter Duncan, Rebecca Coleman, Brittnay Bergstrom, Matthew Douglas, Michelle Penna   By: Samantha Czerkas and Jacob Cherry Cedar 2, 8 Corps Members from AmeriCorps NCCC, has been working with The Black Hills Workshop for their second round project in Rapid City, South Dakota since May 6th and will be there until June 29th. Over the course of the eight week project Cedar 2 is putting in nine hour work days working from 7:15am- 3:45pm, Monday through Friday.

AmeriCorps Maple 7 members help rebuild a community

The team after removing a level of flooring      A team of ten AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) members just completed a two week project, from May 19 to June 2, 2011, with South Troy Restoration, Lutheran Social Services and the City of Zumbro Falls. The NCCC team, Maple 7, worked on restoring a historical schoolhouse and log cabin, restoring civilian homes from flood damage and participating in flood cleanup and beautification of the towns damaged areas.

Andrew Schanbacher Named to Buena Vista University Dean's List

  Andrew Schanbacher, a sophomore from Newhall, was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Buena Vista University. Students named to the Dean's List must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for the semester based on a 4.0 grade point system and must have taken at least 12 hours of coursework.
